Well now you can find out with Twitterment. Twitterment is a mashup using Twitter, JfreeChart (graphs) and Lucene (Search) open source libraries to be able to search and analyze what terms people are twittering about. It is really cool actually and seems to work great. It was a little slow when we tried it but maybe it was just under load at the time.

There is also a compare function where you can compare the stats for two terms.

Twitterment is hosted on UMBC (University of Maryland Baltimore County) and we assume it is a school project of some sort. The credits lead back to two PHD students and Professor Tim Finin. Tim Finin is a Professor in the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Department at UMBC, the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Finin is a member of the UMBC ebiquity group where he is working on projects involving intelligent agents, the semantic web, pervasive computing , and mobile computing.

There is also a stats page that says that 368,103 posts have been indexed, there is an average of 16,500 tweets / hr and a summary of the number of tweets per day (90,000 on mondays!).

<img class="imageStyle" alt="Picture 32" src="http://www.twitterforum.com/files//page0_blog_entry51_1.png"width="511" height="359"/>

<img class="imageStyle" alt="Picture 33" src="http://www.twitterforum.com/files//page0_blog_entry51_2.png"width="505" height="308"/>

We are not sure when the data collection started or how long it will be retained but this will be a cool project to watch.

Below are some screenshots for a search for the term iphone. As you will see, Google maps is also integrated in the results so you can see where your searched terms are in the world..

<img class="imageStyle" alt="Picture 30" src="http://www.twitterforum.com/files//page0_blog_entry51_3.png"width="502" height="950"/>

<img class="imageStyle" alt="Picture 31" src="http://www.twitterforum.com/files//page0_blog_entry51_4.png"width="399" height="787"/>

The Twitter Forums are Back online

The forums are back online with new and improved software. From when we first installed it we noticed the effort they put into the classy interface design and it felt right at home along with our other mac applications.

Install and setup was easy and all we had to do was enter our Twitter account information and it instantly hooked up and got our "tweets".

<img class="imageStyle" alt="logging_in" src="http://www.twitterforum.com/files//page0_blog_entry36_1.png"width="467" height="335"/>

Preferences

The preferences screen is as expected and lets you change some settings in Twitterific. You can decide to view your friends list or the public page, the frequency of tweets refresh, set notifications (visual and sound), window preferences an set a hot key to toggle the window. Screenshot below.

<img class="imageStyle" alt="twitterific preferences" src="http://www.twitterforum.com/files//page0_blog_entry36_2.png"width="339" height="508"/>

The Main Window

The Main Twitterific window is super easy to use and you can see your own tweets as well as your friend's. On each tweet dialouge there are three small icons that let you 1. goto that user's twitter page on twitter.com. 2. goto that user's personal webpage and 3. you can mark that tweet as a favorite. Below the tweets is an area for you to update directly to your account at Twitter. It counts down the number of characters you have left (messages are 140 characters max). A cool feature is that if you enter a long URL, it gets turned into a short url automatically. On the left of the text entry box there are a couple of buttons, home icon goes to the Twitter website, there is a wrench icon that opens the preferences and there is a refresh button. Another cool thing is that the Mac OS X spell check works inside of Twitterific (as you can see in the screenshot below). If you mis-spell a word just right click it and select the correct spelling as usual.

<img class="imageStyle" alt="twitterific dialouge" src="http://www.twitterforum.com/files//page0_blog_entry36_3.png"width="340" height="255"/>

Stability

Overall Twitterific was very stable and has not crashed in the last 3 days that we have been using it. There has been periodic loss of connection but we are not sure if that is due to the Twitter service, Twitterific or our Internet connection.

Conclusion

We are happy with Twitterific and will keep using it as our Mac OS X client. The only other thing we wish it had is the ability to see your list of friends and favorites like on the twitter web page. Another bonus would be the ability to link XML and RSS feeds to your Twitter account directly from Twitterific. Other than that, congrats on a nice clean and simple to use app from the Icon Factory. We look forward to future releases. Twitterific!

Here is a list of Twitterific 2.0 features from their website:

* Clean, concise UI with small desktop footprint
* Auto refreshing at user defined intervals
* Highlights tweets that are unread
* Auto show / hide when new tweets arrive
* Control over window layering and priority
* Single click access to user profile pages
* Switch between friend and public tweets easily
* Keyboard shortcuts for list navigation and more
* Menubar app that doesn't take up Dock space
* Audio notification for new tweets
* Hotkey to show / hide tweets

Leo Laporte moves from twitter to Jaiku

Chief of the TWiT podcast network moves over to the Jaiku service due to confusion of TWiT and Twitter names. I wish to heck he’d named it Tweeter, or Tooter, or anything but Twitter. Twitter is so close to TWiT that I’m afraid it’s really confusing. And it hasn’t helped the confusion that I’ve been such a fan of Twitter. I’m sure half the people there think we have some sort of relationship. But we don’t. So let me repeat…

Twitter has nothing to do with TWiT.

And, I’m afraid, I can’t have anything to do with Twitter, either. Very interesting article entitled Twitter is Dumb but I'm Dumber.

There have been many comments around the net revolving around "Why do I care if someone is cooking dinner, washing underwear (or whatever)? No it isn't perfect yet but it has spurred millions to think about new possibilities for communication, delivery of services, advertising and content delivery.

While it's use in its current form (current twitter service) is indeed limited, it is cool to see that many people are thinking about the new possibilities and how that may change (and help) the lives of people in the future.

It is really about sorting through all the information and communications that cross our desks, devices and minds.

It will be particularly interesting to see if ONLY the relevant info / content can be delivered to the right person on the right device at the right time.. for everyone. First of all we just want to make it clear that these forums are in no part or way connected with the Twitter service, website, parent company(s) or their staff members. We think they have done a great job so far and they have launched a brilliant service. Kudos to everyone at Twitter!

The reason why we are here is simple, there are a lot of questions and discussions going on about the vast new possibilities for the Twitter service and we want to bring everyone together to discuss and to help each other and the community. Our aim is to grow Twitter's user base and provide a secondary support community around it and any 3rd party applications that come from the service and their new API.

More to follow soon!
